119th Street

119th street

leading diagonally

straight to the forest,

the boxed forest

in midst of yellow cabs.

Concrete buildings stretch up so tall,

blocks and blocks of stacked lives

rouse grandiose feelings

for living in the city

I had only dreamed of.

Fed myself through my eyes and nose,

counting cents in my checking account

with the whole city in my metrocard.

How full I felt standing in the subway,

traveling under buildings full of importance

as if I was being shown a secret way to

do all the mundane things.
